Answer-first definitionUpdated 15 Aug 2026

llms.txt · AR-DISC-03

Markdown index at site root summarizing the product and linking what agents should read first. SHOULD per AgentReady, not MUST. Useful for devtool docs, irrelevant for general SEO (Google: not used, fetch ≈0.12%).

Context

Spec at llmstxt.org. 8.7% adoption in top 1k (Jun 2026), but r=0.03 with citations across 300k domains. Not a substitute for answer-first content.

Why it matters for agent readiness

AR-DISC-03 is SHOULD, not MUST. Useful in 2024 for devtool docs. Today real fetch is ≈0.12% (belmon.tech logs Jun–Aug 2026). Google said it doesn't use it. Having the file doesn't correlate with being cited (r=0.03 across 300k domains).

Honest rule: Don't sell llms.txt as SEO. Use it if your audience are developers consuming docs via LLM; don't promise ranking.
